If you are as yet unfamiliar with Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s podcasts, now is the time to get acquainted! Host (and Senior Editor) Jeff Goldsmith does excellent, in-depth interviews with many top screenwriters (both independent as well as big-budget filmmakers).
I recently listened to his interview with Edward Burns and felt compelled to post about it. For those of you unfamiliar with Burns, he has been making (generally successful) very low budget films for the past fifteen years. If you haven’t watched The Brothers McMullen yet, you owe it to yourself to do so…and especially to listen to the Director’s Commentary.
Like Robert Rodriguez and other DIY filmmakers, Burns makes a point of sharing his experiences, tips, etc. with his audience. His latest film, Nice Guy Johnny, was made for $25,000 and can be bought through their website (which will immediately give you an idea for how they’re monetizing their film).
Track down Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s podcast on iTunes, or download directly from their blog. Goldsmith’s interview with Burns touches on many topics of interest to independent filmmakers, in particular new distribution and marketing models.
